English Civil War

So we've had the royalists, but where are the songs of the Parliament, the independents, the weirdos and the sects? Dont tell me they were silent, or did a restored monarch suppress them all?

Cromwell's lot were pretty boring Puritans, not given to fanciful singing.

I'd rather be a roundhead than a cavalier...to the tune of I'd rather be **** than a ***. Fairfax was ahead of his time.

The actual New Model Army sang a lot more than the Royalist armies they faced. Not very exciting songs though: hymns often the Psalms of David.
For sure, the 149th Psalm which in part says:
"Let the high praises of God be in their mouths And a two-edged sword in their hand. To bind their kings with chains, And their nobles with links of iron"
Royalist poet Charles Cotton said
Ev'n like unto the dismal yowl, When tristful dogs at midnight howl ; Or like the dirges that, through nose, hum out to daunt their pagan foes, When holy round-heads go to battle ; With such a yell did Carthage rattle

The Royalist side had by far the more memorable songs but I will keep looking when I have time. Royalist a one to close that should enjoyed on here. The Rump Parliament is the object of the last line.
“Old Noll [Cromwell] when we talked of Magna Charta, Did prophesy well we should all smart-a; And now we have found his Rump‟s Magna Farta"

A marvellous cd by Rev Hammer includes guests The Levellers/Maddy Prior and others (and an appropriate surname as well) ;-)

It would be quite the choice today if you had to choose between being a Parliamentarian or a Royalist
I think I'd have to side with Liz and her lot get the MPs snouts out of the trough!

...Is a very underrated single by The Clash.
I actually prefer the album it's lifted from, Give 'Em Enough Rope, to their much lauded debut, with it's opening track, Safe European Home, just nudging out White Man in Hammersmith Palais, as my favourite track of theirs.
Carry on...
